Media Center and Special Education Renovations
Originally constructed as Frederick High School, Thunder Valley K-8 inherited a large media center designed to serve a high school population. As the school’s enrollment continued to grow, the oversized media center presented an opportunity to better utilize existing space and accommodate the need for additional classrooms.
Ford Architects worked closely with school staff through a series of Design Advisory Group (DAG) meetings to reimagine the media center and identify opportunities for more efficient use of the space. The resulting design incorporates two new classrooms within the existing footprint while preserving a functional, welcoming, and engaging media center tailored to the needs of K-8 students. This approach allowed the school to expand its classroom capacity without increasing the building’s overall footprint.
The renovation also addressed significant challenges within the existing Special Education classroom block, where limited natural light, inefficient circulation, and underutilized spaces created obstacles for both teaching and learning. The redesigned layout provides direct access to each classroom, eliminating the need to pass through adjacent learning spaces and improving privacy and circulation. A new shared movement area, illuminated by a skylight, introduces natural light into the heart of the classroom block and provides a flexible environment for student activities. Semi-private work nooks offer additional spaces for individualized instruction, focused learning, and teacher-student interaction.
Beyond the interior renovations, the project included a series of site improvements aimed at enhancing accessibility and outdoor student experiences. These improvements included a new track spectator area with improved ADA access, shade structures and additional seating for the middle school recess area, and the replacement of a small turf field.
Together, these improvements transform previously inefficient spaces into purposeful, adaptable learning environments while extending the project's impact to the surrounding campus, better supporting the evolving needs of Thunder Valley K-8 students and staff.
