Books

Ford Architects is fueled by curiosity, research, and a sense of commitment to share the knowledge and insights that are vital to creating healthy, regenerative ECE-12 learning environments. That commitment has led Alan Ford to write three books on school design.

by Alan Ford, Kate Mraw, and Betsy del Monte

Creating the Regenerative School.

In Alan's third book, he and co-authors Kate Mraw and Betsy del Monte dive into best practices for regenerative school design. In their research, the authors looked at schools from around the globe on metrics including net-zero energy/carbo strategies, healthy, regenerative building attributes, utilization of evidence-based informed design, occupant satisfaction, and post-occupancy data. Case studies speak to exemplary best practices in creating healthy, climate-appropriate learning environments for early learners through high school students with designs that are beautiful places to learn and embrace restorative principles—enhancing the lives of the occupants, the environment, and the community they reside in.

  • In this book, Alan surveys K-12 schools from around the world that combine the best in aesthetics, sustainability, and high-performance design. K-12 school construction currently represents one of the largest sectors of new construction of any building type. Considering rising energy costs and environmental concerns, there has never been more attention focused on the need to design schools responsibly. It highlights the work that the best architects are doing to respond to those needs while still creating beautiful schools for enhanced learning.

  • Attending school, particularly in the early years of a child's development, can be a daunting experience. In this book, the writers illustrate how the school can welcome students rather than intimidate them. Exploring more than 25 unique design solutions, this book is a visual celebration and analysis of the role of entrances in school architecture.
